Passenger growth is on the rise and so are aircraft orders. You might have already seen our infographic about which airlines have big fleet growth planned. In that content piece we compared the aircraft backorders of airlines to their fleet sizes to calculate the growth rates. This time around, we're focusing our attention on backorder totals.
We collected the fleet figures of active scheduled airlines with at least 1 aircraft. As of April 13, 2018, this amounted to 764 airlines. We also accessed the Airbus, Boeing and Bombardier reports of unfilled aircraft orders for the period ending March 31, 2018.
Backorders from other aircraft manufacturers (for example, Embraer and Tupolev) were excluded because of the timing of available data and the smaller market share of these manufacturers.
